Buying a house in the colder months

Fundamentally there is no difference between buying in summer or winter. Often there are less people out looking to buy when its colder, but conversely there are often less sellers as well.

In some ways buying in winter is better, as you can see the house at its coldest, most miserable. In summer you can get carried away by the nice weather and not realise that it will be an icebox in winter.

Have a look at how its heated. It will likely be warm when you are there, but how much of this is down to heaters on fullblast? If it needs a lot of heating this will up your power bill.

See if there are any damp areas and look outside for any pooling of water to make sure you are not buying a swamp.

Overall I don’t think its much different, but it’s a good time to see how the house will deal with the cold.

And as with any house, make sure it fits your plans, don’t get taken in by nice furniture (that they are not selling you), and that you can afford the payments.
